The SiteMonitor technology was first used to monitor gold mines in Africa. This technology suite marketed by 3D Laser Mapping includes a Riegl LPM 321 longe-range laser scanner that can capture up to 1,000 point measurements per second, to an accuracy of 25mm and at a range of up to 6,000 metres with specialist software to accurately measure snow accumulations and track movements over time. The system also includes a calibrated high-resolution digital camera. The unit is installed in a heated glass house, and can operate in temperatures as low as -20 degrees Centigrade.

Located in Chandigarh/Manali, SASE was set up to combat the hazards of snow and avalanches not only to help inhabitants live safely in the mountains but also to accelerate the pace of socio-economic growth of the inaccessible snowbound hill regions. With detailed snow build-up data in hand, authorities can take steps to preempt an avalanche, saving lives and keeping passes open for trade.
