Transportation Through Surveying and Mapping

The size of this market large. The Government of Kazakhstan indicates that the transportation sector is a growing market worth 26 Billion USD. In a recent speech, Mr Raymond Lim, Sinsapore Minister for Transport and Second Minister for Foreign Affairs, spoke at the World Urban Transport Leaders Summit 2010. He indicated that the transport industry is using about 19% of world energy. The connection he was making here is that transport efficiency plays a large role in the reduction of energy use and improvements in sustainability.

Lim pointed out the many advances that Singapore is making toward a connected and more efficienttransportation system strategy that inter-connects all aspects of transport movement in that country.

From planning through to operation and maintenance, transport infrastructure includes survey measurement technologies and design related tools. Total stations, laser scanning, aerial photography, CAD design tools, GIS data integration and location analysis tools all come into play.

The role of these tools is also changing. As 3D visualisation and data management strategies are employed, the data remains connected throughout the lifecycles of the many projects for roads, ports and other infrastructure. Attention has turned toward ISO Certification of the processes involved as well. These advances are resulting in higher quality infrastructure, more efficient operation and reduced costs during the operation lifecycle.
