With thousands of historical sites portraying ancient Indian culture and civilization, the protection of these structures is imperative. Of these monuments, 3,686 are protected centrally by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), with certain rules regarding construction around these sites to avoid any change in their look. Now, in a bid to protect these areas better, ASI is preparing satellite-based maps to indicate protected and regulated areas around the monuments. The pilot run for Maharashtra has already begun.
