We know that groundwater management is critical to India’s water, food and livelihood security. Groundwater supports more than 55% of our irrigation requirements, 85% of domestic requirements in rural areas and over 50% of requirements in urban and industrial uses in the country. With water levels declining, we need a national movement for recharge. The first meeting of the Artificial Recharge of Groundwater Advisory Council met this morning to deliberate on how the movement for rainwater harvesting and artificial recharge can be made more effective and transformed into a people’s movement.
