Mainz modernizes its geospatial data infrastructure with VertiGIS and Esri

In a significant step in its digital transformation, the German city of Mainz and its municipal data centre (KDZ) have joined forces with VertiGIS and Esri Germany to overhaul the geospatial data infrastructure (GDI). The initiative will introduce a cloud-based, security-certified SaaS platform built to meet current administrative demands and scale with future developments.

At the core of the solution sits Esri’s ArcGIS Online, extended by VertiGIS Studio, VertiGIS FM and further components from the VertiGIS Neo technology portfolio, adding purpose-built functionality for public administration, including web map applications and specialized tools for infrastructure management.

The result is a robust, end-to-end cloud architecture that meets stringent requirements for information security, data protection and regulatory compliance, while remaining scalable enough to grow alongside the city’s evolving needs.

The relaunched GDI positions Mainz – the capital of Rheinland-Pfalz – with a central, high-performance platform serving both citizen-facing services and internal WebGIS applications. The cloud-first approach brings high availability and operational resilience while cutting through what was historically a fragmented landscape of SaaS and managed service components, now consolidated into a single, integrated solution.

Equally significant is the platform’s ability to accelerate day-to-day administrative work. Thanks to modern low-code and no-code technologies, specialized applications can be configured swiftly and adapted as needs evolve with minimal development overhead. A clear data and system architecture underpins it all, ensuring transparency, straightforward maintenance and a foundation built to last.

“Building a modern geospatial data infrastructure is the foundation for our city’s digital twin. By systematically collecting, linking and making geodata analysable, we create the foundation for informed planning decisions in areas such as transportation, climate or social infrastructure. The relaunch of our WebGIS is therefore a key step toward intelligently managed and resilient urban development,” explains Mainz Mayor Nino Haase.
