Foremost UAS Test Range Acquires Integrated Drone Airspace Management System from Kongsberg Geospatial and uAvionix

OTTAWA, Ontario – Kongsberg Geospatial, an Ottawa-based geospatial visualisation software company, and the Foremost UAS Test Range, who operate one of only two Transport Canada certified UAS test ranges in Canada, announced today that they have integrated the Kongsberg Geospatial IRIS UAS situational awareness application combined with uAvionix ADS-B receivers into the CCUVS Range Operations infrastructure.

The Foremost Test Range is a permanent Restricted Airspace area for flying Unmanned Aircraft Systems, located in Southeast Alberta. The airspace is particularly attractive for companies that wish to conduct beyond visual line-of-sight (BVLOS) test flights. The test range provides 700 square nautical miles (2400 square kilometres) of airspace designated for drone operations up to 18,000 feet above sea level.

“Safe BVLOS unmanned flight operations require the very best in equipment and technology,” said Doug Hanna, Foremost UAS Range Manager. “The Kongsberg Geospatial display application combined with the real-time ADS-B and Remote ID monitoring capability from uAvionix provides an extremely cost effective solution to deliver airspace situational awareness and significantly improve safety.”

The Kongsberg Geospatial IRIS display technology enables multiple drones to be monitored simultaneously by a single operator and provides real-time calculation of aircraft separation and communications line-of-sight to enable BVLOS operations. IRIS will provide the range with real-time 2D and 3D visualization of airborne track and weather data, as well as geo-fencing capabilities. The integration of the uAvionix ADS-B and Remote ID positioning capability provides an extremely accurate depiction of BVLOS aircraft.

“We’re pleased to be working with a client like the Foremost UAS Test Range” said Ranald McGillis, President of Kongsberg Geospatial. “This is one of only two Transport Canada certified test ranges in Canada that is applying imagination and engineering expertise to develop a testing range for new UAS solutions to tackle long-range flight problems like pipeline inspection and precision agriculture. At Kongsberg Geospatial, we’ve developed world class technology for sensor integration and airspace awareness for these missions.”
