DGT Associates Launches Owned Subsurface Mobile Mapping System

BOSTON-DGT Associates, New England’s leading surveying and engineering firm, announced the ownership and launch of a state-of-the-art, subsurface mobile mapping system—the latest advancement to the firm’s existing Subsurface Utility Mapping service line. With ownership of this mobile underground mapping system, DGT can enhance service offerings to clients, deliver data at enhanced rates, and transform the industry as one of the few surveying and engineering firms in the nation to own a 3D radar unit.

As the company to pioneer the term Subsurface Utility Mapping (SUM), DGT has led the industry in underground mapping for more than 25 years. This technological expansion will enable DGT to map information underground more safely, quickly, and accurately. DGT will continue serving existing clients in higher education, transportation, industrial, residential and commercial development sectors, to name a few, while also partnering with new clients, including utility owners and other surveying and engineering firms around the United States.

“We are excited to own this game-changing mobile mapping system and look forward to bringing this solution to our clients and partners throughout the region,” said Michael A. Twohig, DGT’s Director of Subsurface Utility Mapping. “Additionally, we were proud to be deeply involved in the R&D process, ensuring the system was built by and designed for surveyors and engineers. Being able to complete more subsurface investigations while reducing our carbon footprint was also a major consideration for investing in this system.”

“This technology gives geospatial practitioners a safer way to collect large amounts of data quickly and efficiently, a need that has existed for generations,” said Michael Clifford, Co-Founder and Principal. “As the need to repair, enhance, and expand the country’s infrastructure and energy systems continues to increase, it is essential we can safely and accurately capture an underground view without putting our professionals or community members at risk.”

In addition to its exclusivity, the mobile mapping system was built with a unique structure. While traditional systems are trailer-based, DGT’s system is form factored to the vehicle and tailored to collect data at higher speeds than traditional collection approaches; the system will allow for easier data collection in large areas and traffic zones and keep employees safer inside the vehicle.
