Map of the Month: GfK Demographics, senior households, Germany 2019

GfK’s Map of the Month for April shows the regional distribution of senior households in Germany in 2019.

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s crucial to identify vulnerable populations, such as senior households. According to GfK’s recent study on Germany, the country’s eastern states have a comparatively high share of this demographic, with the top spot going to the urban district of Suhl in Thuringia, where 48 percent of all household heads are 60 years or older. The rural district of Altenburger Land (46.6 percent) in Thuringia takes second place, followed by the urban district of Dessau-Roßlau (46.5 percent) in Saxony-Anhalt.
