Esri Workbook Teaches How to Plan, Develop, and Present a GIS Project

REDLANDS, Calif. — Esri, the global leader in spatial analytics, today announced the publication of Understanding GIS: An ArcGIS Pro Project Workbook, Fourth Edition. The workbook instructs readers on how to complete a geographic information system (GIS) project from start to finish.

Understanding GIS: An ArcGIS Pro Project Workbook provides instructors with a resource for teaching students how to use GIS for a single project that incorporates real data and uses the most up-to-date spatial analysis methods and technology.

To complete their project, readers will use ArcGIS Pro, an ArcGIS Desktop application with advanced 2D and 3D analysis and visualization capabilities, along with Esri ArcGIS OnlineEsri Story Maps apps, United States Census data, and additional municipal data. The book has been updated to be compatible with ArcGIS Pro 2.2. Updates also have been made to the demographic and parcel data, and chapter 9 was rewritten to reflect changes in ArcGIS Online capabilities. The book comes with a 180-day trial of ArcGIS Desktop software.

The step-by-step instructions in the nine lessons show readers how to use ArcGIS Pro to explore the project data, select the data for use in the analysis, build a database, edit data, conduct the analysis, build a model to automate the analysis, make a map to present the results of the analysis, and then share the results in a web map.

The book’s authors include educators at the Center for Spatial Studies at the University of Redlands in California including David Smith, spatial instruction manager; Nathan Strout, director of spatial technology; and Steven Moore, director. Coauthoring the book were Thomas Balstrøm, associate professor of geoinformatics at the Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark; Christian Harder, a technology writer and information designer at Esri; and Tim Ormsby, a technical writer at Esri.

Understanding GIS: An ArcGIS Pro Project Workbook, Fourth Edition, is available in print (ISBN: 9781589485266, 414 pages, US$79.99) and as an e-book (ISBN: 9781589485273, 414 pages, US$79.99). Both editions can be obtained from most online retailers worldwide. The print edition is available for purchase at esri.com/esripress or by calling 1-800-447-9778.
