Crate.io Introduces CrateDB 2.0 Enterprise and Open Source Editions

SAN FRANCISCO – Crate.io, developers of CrateDB, a leading open source SQL database for real time analytics of IoT and machine data, today announced the availability of CrateDB 2.0 in both open source and enterprise versions. The newest version of CrateDB features clustering upgrades and a number of SQL improvements, along with Enterprise Edition features including authentication and authorization for enhanced security, new performance monitoring tools and support for user-defined query functions to enable more advanced in-database analytics.

“Rapid storage and both frequent and flexible queries of IoT and machine data place unique requirements on databases – requirements that few are specifically designed to meet,” said Jason Stamper, analyst, 451 Research. “CrateDB was built from the ground up for such use cases.”

CrateDB, which was made generally available in December 2016, has been downloaded more than 1.3 million times. More than 50 Crate.io customers run CrateDB applications in production, with 72 percent using CrateDB to manage data generated by “things,” including sensors, GPS devices, machine logs and connected homes and vehicles.

“There’s a huge opportunity to use industrial IoT data to impact our business,” said Philipp Lehner, CEO USA, Alpla. “Thousands of sensors generate data along our production lines, and CrateDB allows us to analyze that firehose of data 24 hours a day, and use it to make real-time changes to factory efficiency that improve product output for our customers.”

CrateDB is an open source SQL database for real-time processing of IoT and machine data such as manufacturing sensor data and device-generated GPS data. CrateDB makes machine data applications that were previously only possible using NoSQL solutions available to mainstream SQL developers. CrateDB scales query throughput linearly with cluster size, making capacity both more predictable and affordable than with other solutions. Its unique capabilities are enabled by the following innovations:

  • Distributed SQL query engine for faster JOINs, aggregations, and ad-hoc queries
  • Support for real-time and predictive analytics on geospatial, time series, full-text, JSON and other structured and unstructured data
  • Container architecture and automatic data sharding for simple scaling

New features available in CrateDB 2.0 include:

  • Clustering upgrades with improved performance and resiliency
    • Faster aggregations and Group-by query performance
    • New index structures for faster range queries, geospatial queries and queries on IP address data types
  • SQL Improvements
    • Aggregations on joins
    • Sub-selects
    • Table renaming and reindexing
  • Enterprise Edition features
    • Enhanced security via authentication and authorization capabilities
    • Database performance monitoring capabilities, via new CrateDB Admin UI with native performance monitoring tools and third party monitoring via JMX integration
    • User-defined functions via SQL/Javascript

Managed Service Deployment

CrateDB 2.0 is also available as a managed service provided by Crate.io. This flexible deployment option allows enterprises to offload time-consuming and costly database administration responsibilities to the foremost experts in CrateDB use and management, helping to ensure maximum uptime and efficiency. “The IoT era is upon us and growing fast,” said Christian Lutz, CEO of Crate.io. “We are extremely pleased to be working with so many IoT innovators and keeping pace with their new data management requirements. CrateDB 2.0 contains many customer-driven enhancements, and our team is excited to continue breaking new ground in machine data during the months and years ahead.”

CrateDB 2.0 Enterprise Edition is available immediately, with per cluster-based pricing. For more information, visit: link.
