ArkEdge Space Successfully Deploys VDES Antenna on AE1 Micro-satellite

ArkEdge Space, a Tokyo-based space start-up delivering micro-satellite constellations from design to operations, announced that its operational micro-satellite AE1a has successfully deployed its VDES antenna in orbit.

This antenna is a core component of the VHF Data Exchange System (VDES), supporting next-generation maritime communications. The successful deployment establishes the foundation for on-orbit communications verification.

AE1a utilizes a variant of ArkEdge Space’s standardized 6U satellite bus equipped with a deployable VHF-band antenna designed for transmission and reception. The satellite was developed to demonstrate technologies for wide-area, real-time vessel tracking and maritime communications. With the antenna successfully deployed, the program can advance beyond reception-focused verification toward full two-way communications testing.

ArkEdge Space has been advancing VDES-related technology demonstrations across multiple satellites. This achievement marks a significant step forward in the company’s on-orbit verification efforts using deployable antenna systems. Going forward, ArkEdge Space will continue validation activities in coordination with satellites already operating in orbit, further advancing development toward a future VDES constellation.
