Maptitude Map Featured in “The Quarantine Atlas” from Bloomberg CityLab

NEWTON, MA (USA) – The Maptitude Team is proud to share that a map created with Maptitude GIS Software was featured in The Quarantine Atlas: Mapping Global Life Under COVID-19, a book developed by Bloomberg CityLab and published by Chronicle Books.

The work, authored by J. Kevin Byrne, Professor Emeritus of Visualization Science at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, documents the Minneapolis landscape during the social and spatial upheaval that followed the 2020 murder of George Floyd. Byrne used Maptitude to create a detailed map combining field sketches, photographs, and Minneapolis Police Department data to record protest locations and memorials. His submission was included in The Quarantine Atlas, which explores how people around the world re-imagined their communities amid the pandemic’s disruptions.

“I created my map with the GIS software Maptitude and data from Minneapolis Police Department reports that specify exact kinds of incidents of force” noted Byrne. Byrne emphasized that Maptitude was instrumental in his visualization process. The final spread, titled Social Change, appears near the end of the book (page 175) and presents a collage of mapped police incidents and memorial imagery from 38th Street and Chicago Avenue (the site of George Floyd’s death).

The Bloomberg CityLab write-up about The Quarantine Atlas is available on the Bloomberg website.

“Maptitude enables creators, educators, and researchers to visualize and communicate spatial stories that define our times,” said Stewart Berry, VP, Maptitude. “We’re honored that Professor Byrne used Maptitude to capture such a powerful and historically significant moment.”
