Danish satellite toll system uses Kapsch TrafficCom technology

Vienna – The new nationwide heavy goods vehicle (HGV) toll system in Denmark relies on technology by Kapsch TrafficCom. The company provides hardware and software to the Danish partner company Brobizz.

The kilometre- and emission-based toll system uses modern satellite technology to determine the exact route driven and automatically calculates the correct toll amount. Kapsch TrafficCom supplies TÜV-certified toll devices, also known as on-board units (OBUs), for trucks, as well as the necessary software platform for processing the trucks’ satellite-generated position data.

The advantage of satellite tolling is the more precise calculation of the distance travelled, which enables fairer tolling. In addition, satellite tolling requires less roadside infrastructure and less maintenance compared to other distance-based tolling systems, and it enables more flexible coverage of the tolled road networks.

While the toll in Denmark applies exclusively to trucks, satellite-based collection is also an efficient method of tolling cars more fairly and sustainably, since less additional infrastructure is required than for conventional toll systems.

Satellite tolling for more fairness and sustainability

The satellite toll, known as KmToll, replaces the previous time-based Eurovignette system, under which lorries could pay a fixed amount for a certain period of time, regardless of how much they actually used the road. Satellite-based distance recording now ensures that the exact distance travelled is billed, which makes for a fairer toll structure. The additional consideration of CO2 emissions also promotes sustainability, as lower-emission trucks pay less.

The nationwide KmToll system applies to heavy commercial vehicles weighing more than 12 tonnes and, in the first stage, covers around 10,900 kilometres of road as well as all environmental zones in the country. From 2028, the entire public road network, covering around 75,000 kilometres, is to be subject to tolls.

Hardware and software from Kapsch TrafficCom

The centrepiece of the system is the OBU 5310-22A from Kapsch TrafficCom, the most compact, lightest and most environmentally friendly unit in its category. In addition to satellite-based tolls, the OBU also supports classic shortwave-based toll systems, making it suitable for trips in many different countries. The satellite platform from Kapsch TrafficCom processes the device data and enables the partners to charge the correct toll amounts. Kapsch TrafficCom also provides OBU configuration via mobile communications, OBU hardware diagnostic tools and repair services, and robust asset management. Both the hardware and software work seamlessly with the systems of the partner companies, which ensures additional efficiency.

The five-year contract between Kapsch TrafficCom and Brobizz, signed in July 2023, includes an option to extend it by a further twelve months.
