RIEGL opens high-tech hangar to strengthen airborne Lidar operations

RIEGL, a global leader in airborne, mobile, terrestrial, industrial and UAV-based laser scanning solutions, has officially opened a new, state-of-the-art hangar in Krems, Austria. Located just a short drive from its global headquarters in Horn, the facility represents a major step in RIEGL’s strategic expansion and commitment to excellence in airborne Lidar.

The grand opening event drew more than 750 attendees – including employees and their families, government officials, and key clients from across Central Europe –underscoring the significance of the occasion for the company and its partners.

Optimizing airborne operations

“This new hangar is more than just a building, it’s a strategic cornerstone in our mission to deliver world-class airborne Lidar solutions,” noted Dr Johannes Riegl, founder and CEO. “It enables us to bring even greater precision, efficiency and flexibility to our airborne operations, while also providing a dedicated space for innovation, testing and collaboration.”

The facility will serve as the central hub for RIEGL’s airborne activities, currently housing two aircraft – a Diamond DA62 MPP and a Cessna T206H. Both are equipped to support final calibrations and testing with RIEGL’s high-performance Lidar systems. Purpose-built to facilitate system integration, calibration and deployment, the hangar is set to enhance the company’s service capabilities on a global scale.

Aerobatic flight demonstrations

The celebration featured a full programme designed to showcase RIEGL’s airborne capabilities. Guests were treated to helicopter rides, aerobatic flight demonstrations, and a static display of aircraft and airborne Lidar sensors. The event also included guided tours of the hangar, offering an inside look at its advanced infrastructure and operational setup. Culinary highlights were curated by Eva Riegl, who coordinated a grand buffet and refreshments throughout the day.

Several RIEGL partners played a key role in the event’s success. Diamond Aircraft’s Chief Pilot Martin Scherrer led a four-aircraft aerial display that combined precision flying with engineering elegance. Volker Fuchs, CEO of Test-Fuchs, delivered a dynamic solo aerobatic performance, while Hannes Hecher, CEO of Schiebel, showcased the company’s world-leading Camcopter S-100 drone on static display. Wolfgang Grumeth, CEO of Airborne Technologies, contributed with a flight display using a Diamond HK36 Eco Dimona. Markus Hafner, regional sales director, Piston Aircraft at Textron Aviation, presented the latest version of the renowned Cessna T206H, a key component of RIEGL’s airborne fleet.

The total investment in the Krems facility exceeds EUR6 million, with roughly half allocated to the construction and outfitting of the hangar, and the remainder invested in aircraft and specialized airborne equipment. The move signals RIEGL’s continued dedication to maintaining its leadership position in the global Lidar market through innovation, infrastructure, and client-focused service delivery.
