Woolpert Contracted by Denver International Airport for On-Call Geospatial Support Services

The firm will provide survey, engineering, and GIS data acquisition and development for the third-busiest airport in the world.

DENVER — The Denver International Airport (DEN) has selected Woolpert to provide on-call geospatial support services under a multiyear, $1.4 million contract. Services include geospatial and traditional survey, GIS data acquisition and development, digital elevation modeling and analyses, interior and exterior lidar acquisition, building information modeling and 3D scanning, civil engineering and application development.

DEN became the third-busiest airport in the world in 2021, serving approximately 59 million passengers for the year. The airport is Colorado’s primary economic engine, generating more than $33 billion annually for the region, and continues to expand to meet demand. Woolpert Aviation Program Director and Senior Associate Ed Copeland said the airport’s mature GIS system will benefit from the latest technologies and solutions, which support efficient and cost-effective decisions to help guide and accelerate recovery from the pandemic and growth.

“Geospatial data streamlines and accelerates systems and processing at airports, assisting with workflow management, asset location and management, and overall coordination and execution,” Copeland said. “We’re looking at integrating AutoCAD, BIM and GIS data with other systems to support operations and maintenance, utilizing the IoT (Internet of Things) and incorporating live information into dashboarding and other applications.”

This on-call GIS airport contract is the most recent awarded to Woolpert, which is providing similar support to airports across the country. Woolpert is adept at providing aviation engineering and design, supporting both airside and landside development, and is a leader in geospatial technologies and applications.

“GIS support for airports fits easily into our wheelhouse, sitting at the intersection of our aviation and geospatial expertise,” Copeland said. “We have developed a team that understands the needs of airports and how geospatial data successfully addresses those needs. Our combination of history and innovation enables us to develop and implement top-tier programs for valued clients like Denver, helping them work smarter and faster. We’re excited to be able to provide these services and to get this contract underway.”
