Sanborn Supports the Red River Water Management Board With Mapping Technology for Water Resource and Flood Control Needs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.-The Sanborn Map Company, Inc. (Sanborn) announces it has completed collection of more than 20,000 square miles of Quality Level 1 lidar for the Red River Watershed Management Board (RRWMB). Sanborn completed the lidar acquisition over a 29-day period in the fall of 2021. The data will be processed using technology that includes AI algorithms to extract ground, vegetation, hydrography, and structure information.

As part of this contract, Sanborn will provide RRWMB with a Sanborn SaaS product, Sanborn Geo-Data Explorer™ which provides users with a cloud-based viewer and analytical tools that allow for discovering, accessing, and analyzing the datasets. This tool enables the RRWMB to support their end users and stakeholders with self-fulfillment for data access. “Sanborn’s investment in new technology has enabled the company to provide additional value to customers while maintaining competitive cost and aggressive delivery schedule,” stated Mr. Jason Caldwell, Sanborn’s Vice President, Business Development.

The RRWMB is collecting new data of the ground elevation in the region to better predict and mitigate flooding. The lidar data is useful when looking at flood mitigation and habitat restoration projects. “The existing data is about 12 or 13 years old and with changes on the landscape, and then also changes in the technology, the Board just thought it was the right time to update this data,” added RRWMB Executive Director Mr. Robert Sip.

ABOUT THE RED RIVER WATER MANAGEMENT DISTRICT

The RRWMB’s jurisdiction and authority encompasses the area managed by the individual watershed districts that have membership on the Board. Seven watershed districts within the Red River Valley form the RRWMB including the Joe River, Two Rivers, Roseau River, Middle-Snake-Tamarac Rivers, Red Lake, Wild Rice, and Bois de Sioux.
