Tony Spicci Takes the Reins as GISCI’s New Executive Director

After a comprehensive national search, the Board of Directors of GIS Certification Institute recently announced Tony Spicci GISP CGMP as its new Executive Director. The addition of a full-time executive director provides an opportunity for GISCI to be more active in the geospatial community and promote the program to individuals and organizations.

Martin Roche, GISCI Board President, announced, “I am excited, on behalf of the GISCI Board of Directors, to announce the results of our national search for a new Executive Director. Mr. Tony Spicci, GISP CGMP, has a long successful history of leadership in GIS professional associations and public service. He possesses all the qualities we were seeking in an Executive Director: vision, professional experience, technical competence, a strong sense of ethics, and long-term involvement in GIS professional associations. I am certain Tony will professionally and ably lead GISCI as we continue to improve the Institute and our certification processes.”

Tony Spicci has been active in the geospatial community for almost 30 years. He began his professional career with the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) in 1992 building a team of scientists to support and conduct research within the Department. In addition, Tony has been effective in facilitating the use of GIS throughout the state and nation and was instrumental in establishing the Missouri GIS Advisory Committee (MGISAC), helping introduce the ‘For The Nation’ initiative as President of National States Geographic Information Council (NSGIC), and serving on the Missouri Geographic Names Board and National Geospatial Advisory Committee. Recognizing the need for better coordination among geospatial professionals, Tony helped lead the effort to create the Coalition of Geospatial Organizations (COGO).

In his time in this role, Tony aims to work with the Board to continue GISCI’s growth in the geospatial industry. “During the next three years I would like to increase the value of this GISP designation to the community and our members, increase the expectation of certification from employers and contractors and finally, to grow our community. The GISP certification continues to gain significance and we need to reach out and spread that message to the community.” Tony announced. “In addition, we need to work to ensure the integrity and ethical commitment to our profession remains at the center of the GISP designation.”

Tony assumed his new position on May 15, 2021 taking over for Candice Luebbering who served previously in the role. GISCI is grateful for the efforts of Bill Hodge, who has guided GISCI for the last 8 years. Bill will continue for a few more months to help Tony transition into the position before officially retiring.
