Velodyne Executive Addresses How Lidar Enhances ADAS Performance

SAN JOSE, Calif.- Velodyne Lidar, Inc. today announced that its Director of Automotive Programs Rajeev Thakur will be a featured speaker at the Automotive Lidar 2019 Conference, which takes place on September 25-26 in Detroit. Thakur will discuss how Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) can be optimized for safety by utilizing lidar technology with complementary cameras and radar.

At the conference, the Velodyne booth will highlight the Velodyne Alpha Puck™, a lidar sensor specifically made for autonomous driving and advanced vehicle safety at highway speeds, and the directional view Velodyne Velarray™, an integral component for ADAS. Velodyne’s lidar sensors deliver an industry-leading combination of long range, high resolution and wide field of view.

In his session, called “Opportunities for Lidar in the Growing Market of ADAS,” Thakur will provide insight into the use of lidar technology as the cornerstone of a successful ADAS solution. He will discuss how adding a directional lidar sensor in an ADAS can contribute to the prevention of forward-facing vehicle crashes. The session will explore how lidar provides essential intelligence to ADAS to detect more objects and offers cars a more detailed view of their surroundings to maximize roadway safety.

“Lidar is a strong complement to the currently used ADAS sensor suite of cameras and radar. For example, free space and object detection at key-on, even before the vehicle moves in tricky situations like a poorly lit parking garage, highlight the strengths of our lidar. Velodyne provides the range, resolution and field of view to facilitate robust object detection, allowing for longer braking distance and increased safety. The size of our Velarray sensor enables seamless integration including behind windshields,” said Thakur.

At Velodyne Lidar, Thakur is responsible for building Velodyne’s lidar business in the automotive market. In this role, he supports OEM customers to select, design-in and launch Velodyne’s wide lidar portfolio for autonomous vehicles and ADAS functions. Thakur has been in the Detroit automotive industry since 1990 – working for companies such as OSRAM Opto Semiconductors, Bosch, Johnson Controls and Chrysler. He is a member of the SAE Active Safety Standards development committee and a reviewer for IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Transactions.
