[New York City, NY] — The American Geographical Society (AGS) announced Ambassador Samantha Power will be a keynote speaker for the 2019 AGS Fall Symposium, Geography 2050: Borders and a Borderless World. Ambassador Power will give her keynote presentation on Friday, November 22, 2019 at Columbia University.
Ambassador Power is a Professor of Practice at the Harvard Kennedy School and Harvard Law School. From 2013 to 2017, Ambassador Power served as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations and a member of President Obama’s cabinet. From 2009 to 2013, she served on the National Security Council as Special Assistant to the President for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights. She earned a B.A. from Yale University and a J.D. from Harvard Law School. Ambassador Power began her career as a war correspondent, reporting from places such as Bosnia, East Timor, Kosovo, Rwanda, Sudan, and Zimbabwe. She was the founding executive director of the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy at the Kennedy School. Her book, “A Problem from Hell: America and the Age of Genocide” won the Pulitzer Prize in 2003. She is also the author of the New York Times bestseller “Chasing the Flame: Sergio Vieira de Mello and the Fight to Save the World.” Ambassador Power is currently writing a memoir, “The Education of an Idealist,” due out in September 2019. Power earned a B.A. from Yale University and a J.D. from Harvard Law School.
