ComEd Selects TerraGo and Deploys Mobile Applications for Smart Streetlight Inventory and Installation

TerraGo®, an award-winning provider of field-proven smart utility applications, announced today that it has been selected and awarded a contract by Commonwealth Edison Company (ComEd), a unit of Chicago-based Exelon Corporation (NYSE: EXC), for mobile applications that will help automate the inventory, installation and commissioning of approximately 140,000 smart streetlights. ComEd’s innovative smart LED streetlights program will improve the reliability of public lighting infrastructure and create efficiencies that lead to savings for municipalities. Smart streetlighting systems also have the potential to support emerging sensor-based technologies designed to enhance community safety and resiliency, and new city services.

ComEd has now successfully deployed these customized inventory and installation applications using TerraGo Streetlights®, a unique, zero-code mobile application framework, fully-integrated with Itron’s leading smart city management platform, SLV.

“In large-scale installations involving thousands of smart devices, the TerraGo mobile application is especially useful in helping crews efficiently navigate to and from locations, automating the commissioning of lights, and accelerating energy savings and other benefits to our communities,” said Shay Bahramirad, Vice President, Engineering and Smart Grid, ComEd.

“Our platform was designed to deliver customized applications with operationally-verified smart streetlight features, as opposed to building one-off, custom software from scratch. Because it’s configurable in hours and days, not weeks and months, we were able to help ComEd deploy the solution more quickly and realize the benefits of its streetlight program sooner, rather than relying on traditional custom software development,” said David Basil, CEO at TerraGo Technologies.

The ComEd inventory and installation applications both consist of native iOS, Android and web-based apps, with easily configurable workflows, all connected to a secure cloud-based server. The inventory application enables ComEd personnel to efficiently track the full chain-of-custody of all smart streetlight nodes, throughout their entire lifecycle, to specific inventory or pole locations at all times. The installation application helps crews navigate to streetlight poles to perform new installs or maintenance tasks, while automating the commissioning of nodes with Itron’s SLV. Both applications provide numerous time-saving productivity features, including barcode/QR code scanning from phones or tablets, as well as data validation features to ensure data quality, reduce errors and prevent return trips.
