Sanborn Receives Final Acceptance and Praise for Early Completion of Arkansas Statewide Orthoimagery Project

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.- The Sanborn Map Company Inc. (Sanborn) team mobilized to Arkansas to collect high-resolution imagery to map the entire State of Arkansas under the 2017-2018 Statewide Orthoimagery Program. Sanborn collected more than 50,000 aerial images at 12-inch and 6-inch resolutions, all with 4-bands, covering over 60,000 square miles. The initial 12-inch resolution collection, covering the entire State, was completed within a total of four (4) weeks.

Sanborn provided an innovative cloud-based service solution for imagery delivery and quality review. The service solution included delivery of geo-referenced imagery within four (4) weeks from flight, allowing stakeholders early access to imagery web services while final image processing was performed. Sanborn’s early delivery system allowed end users access to imagery substantially faster than the previous Arkansas Statewide contract for similar services.

The Statewide Orthoimagery Program fulfills the requirement for the Arkansas GIS Office to update and maintain the Arkansas statewide imagery base map. The base map products are an important resource for state and local governing entities, and they form the foundation that enables accuracy and consistency for the geospatial products and data produced in and for the State of Arkansas.

“The early access and expedited imagery delivery was a major benefit for the State’s Geographic Information System base map,” says Shelby D. Johnson, Geographic Information Officer from the Arkansas GIS Office. “We were able to provide imagery data quicker than previous projects while dramatically improving the resolution and quality of the imagery for many areas. The new data provides significant value to our constituents. Our ability to quickly disseminate this data to many of our rural 9-1-1 centers in the State will enable them to put it to use for public safety faster. It’s a springboard for them on the steps toward next-generation 9-1-1 capability.”

The project culminated in a meeting on October 3-6, 2017, with officials from the Arkansas GIS Office and representatives from Sanborn meeting at the Arkansas GIS User Forum in Eureka Springs, Ark., where Sanborn presented a complete overview of the project to both stakeholders and end-users. At the meeting, the project team worked with State and county agencies to provide detailed information as to the products and distribution.
