GolfNow Chooses CrateDB to Enrich Golfing Experience for Millions of Golfers by Processing Geospatial Data in Real Time

SAN FRANCISCO- Crate.io, developers of CrateDB, a leading open source SQL database for real time analytics of IoT and machine data, today announced that GolfNow, a division of Golf Channel and part of the NBC Sports Group, has deployed CrateDB for storage and retrieval of location (GPS) data for more than three million users and 9,000 golf courses worldwide. GolfNow has realized significant savings by replacing a third-party GIS database with CrateDB.

“CrateDB is a better solution for our needs than any other SQL or NoSQL database we tried,” said Sheriff Mohamed, director of architecture, GolfNow. “It was easy to migrate code off of our legacy SQL database and onto CrateDB so we could benefit immediately from its data flexibility and scalable performance.”

GolfNow uses the leading-edge CrateDB technology to enable over three million registered golfers to locate golf courses nearby and book tee times through the web, e-mail and mobile devices. GolfNow further enhances the golfing experience by providing golfers with real-time locationing — including distance from the pin and score-keeping, while playing courses all over the world.

CrateDB, which has been in use at GolfNow since 2015, scaled more easily than their legacy SQL Server database, and performed searches faster than MongoDB and other NoSQL databases they tried. The deployment of CrateDB has been made even easier by its microservices architecture, enabling GolfNow to deploy, operate, and scale their data platform in an automated way running CrateDB on Docker and Kubernetes. CrateDB currently performs real-time queries of more than 300 million rows of data hundreds of times per second.

CrateDB is an open source SQL database for real-time processing of IoT and machine data, such as device-generated GPS data. CrateDB makes machine data applications that were previously only possible using NoSQL solutions available to mainstream SQL developers. Its unique capabilities are enabled by the following innovations:

  • Distributed SQL query engine for faster JOINs, aggregations, and ad-hoc queries
  • Support for real time and predictive analytics on geospatial, time series, full-text, JSON, and other structured and unstructured data
  • Container architecture and automatic data sharding for simple scaling

“GolfNow is a very forward-thinking software team that puts state of the art technology to work for their users and golf course partners,” said Christian Lutz, CEO of Crate.io. “We are excited to see them putting CrateDB capabilities to the test and we are pleased to say that we are prepared to meet the challenge at every step, or every swing, as the case may be.”
