Smithsonian Institution’s National Air & Space Museum to Receive Douglas S. Morrow Public Outreach Award

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – As the world celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing in the summer of 2019, the Smithsonian Institution’s National Air & Space Museum (NASM) revolutionized the way the public could remember, honor, and share that life-changing moment.

Partnered with 59 Productions, the NASM team brought the Apollo 11 mission launch, lunar landing, and splashdown to life, projecting them onto the side of the 555’ Washington Monument. Over several nights, thousands of people from around the world gathered on the Washington Mall in Washington, D.C., to take in the sights, sounds, and celebrations of this momentous human achievement.

By celebrating Apollo 11 in such a unique manner, NASM not only recreated some of the “Apollo magic” for generations who didn’t have the opportunity to experience it first hand, but also inspired all those who witnessed the tribute about the promise of space explorations to come.

In recognition of this public awareness, NASM will receive the 2020 Douglas S. Morrow Public Outreach Award, presented annually by the Space Foundation to an organization or individual who has made significant contributions to the public awareness and understanding of space programs and technology. The award was named for an Academy Award-winning writer and producer, space advocate, and early member of the Space Foundation Board of Directors.

The 2020 Douglas S. Morrow Public Outreach Award will be presented at the Space Foundation’s 36th Space Symposium, to be held March 30 – April 2, 2020, at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Colo. The Space Symposium is attended annually by thousands of the world’s top space leaders, representing all sectors of the global space community.
