Column: GIS Delivers in Christchurch – SSSI

I am writing this on a ‘normal’ day in Christchurch. This entails being shaken out of bed this morning by a 4.1 double and ensuing blackout. I went to work in my long-term ‘temporary’ office in the vast cold expanse of the art gallery only for my entire team to be sent home early as the space was required for a corporate function. On the ride home I mused upon the strange duality that now exists across the city: broken, shattered buildings right next door to shiny undamaged ones, progress and improvement versus central city blocks frozen in time, paralysis versus action, the sad silhouette of the crumpled and leaning Grand Chancellor Hotel backlit by a stunning pink sunset.
