Ground-based Tech to Fill GPS Black Holes

An Australian company is poised to take advantage of growing frustration at the limitations of satellite-dependent global positioning systems. Professor Chris Rizos, of the School of Surveying and Spatial Information Systems at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), says the global positioning system (GPS) is becoming a victim of its own success. “As more and more people use it, what they discover is they can’t use it all the time because they can’t see enough sky,” says Rizos, who is also the president of the International Association of Geodesy.
