The Getech Group Delivers Insights into African Lakes from Space

Getech, providers of natural resources exploration data and information expertise, has recently developed a new gravity data product that will enhance explorationists’ understanding of the East African Rift.

Potential fields data have proved particularly successfully within this environment and numerous oil companies have cited how the use of this type of information has had direct positive impacts on their exploration campaigns.

Getech experts have used a technically innovative method to create these new datasets by converting lake surface satellite altimeter measurements to gravity.  The raw data was obtained from latest measurements collected by the Cryosat-2 and Jason-1 satellites which were then combined with previously acquired GEOSAT data.

This unique combination of data and expertise – the Getech team had to work out how to process a different satellite mode from Cryosat-2 – has created information that is of a sufficient density to produce real insight for explorationists.

Getech has created these insight-products, advanced processing packages and linked onshore data for Lake Albert, Lake Edward, Lake Malawi, Lake Mweru, Lake Rukwa, Lake Tanganyika, Lake Turkana and Lake Victoria.

Simon Campbell, Head of Gravity and Magnetic Solutions for Getech explains more about how and why his company has developed these new data products; “translating our processing methods developed in open oceans to inland lakes has been a significant technical leap forward.  This advancement, combined with the increased data density has resulted in us providing complete coverage and insight over these inland lakes; an enivronment where we have seen potential fields play a key role in exploration.”

Getech is a leading AIM-listed petroleum and minerals consultancy, focused on helping its customers understand and evaluate the geological risks and opportunities associated with locating and extracting natural resources.

Best known historically for its unique global gravity and magnetic data holdings, and more recently for the addition of its flagship knowledge base ‘Globe’, Getech’s acquisition of ERCL in April 2015 and Exprodat in June 2016, has further extended its capabilities.

The Group’s diverse and growing client base includes oil and gas industry super-majors, independents, national oil companies, government petroleum agencies, mining companies and new-ventures start-ups. For these clients, Getech works across a broad spectrum of subsurface and data management problems; providing geosciences data, interpretation products and services at a wide range of scales.
