Michelin Joins the Avenza Map Store to Digitalize Its Iconic Maps

GREENVILLE, S.C. – As a map publisher and leading mobility company, Michelin has joined the Avenza Map Store to offer its maps to a new audience of mobile map users through the Avenza Maps app.

The Avenza Map Store has been an authoritative source of high-quality digital maps for recreational and professional uses since 2012. This partnership will enable Michelin to meet consumer needs and address the increasing demand for mobile maps that include offline or off-network access and functionality.

A limited number of Michelin’s popular road and tourist maps and bundles are available in PDF format in the Avenza Map Store, with plans to expand the map portfolio over time. All maps are georeferenced and maintain locational and spatial awareness on GSP-enabled smartphones and tablets, meaning that users can locate their positions and navigate even without a cellular network or internet connection.

“Michelin has guided travelers to the best trails, hotels and culinary destinations for over 120 years, and is excited to now offer a mobile solution for its iconic maps,” said Eileen Osteen, director of travel and lifestyle sales for Michelin North America. “Michelin’s partnership with Avenza Maps supports our mission to provide a better way forward for our customers by offering an enhanced digital experience, especially for travelers who venture off the grid.”

The Avenza Map Store currently includes nearly 1 million free and paid maps that users can search and browse, download, and purchase exclusively for use in the Avenza Maps app. App users can mark points of interest, attach photos, easily measure distances and areas, record GPS tracks and more using the mapping tools. Avenza offers step-by-step video instructions on how to navigate these features within the app.

“We are extremely pleased to have Michelin on board with their excellent catalog of maps,” said Ted Florence, chief executive officer for Avenza Systems. “We believe that everyone should have access to quality maps on their devices without being tied to data plans, the internet or single-map-database streaming services.”
