Velodyne Showcases World’s Most Advanced Lidar for Autonomous Vehicles at SmartDrivingCar Summit

Velodyne Lidar, Inc. today announced it is sponsoring the SmartDrivingCar Summit, which takes place on May 15-16 in Princeton, N.J. and brings together buyers, sellers, and facilitators of autonomous cars, trucks, and buses. At the summit, Velodyne will discuss and demonstrate their smart, powerful lidar solutions as an essential technology for autonomous vehicles (AVs) and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).

The SmartDrivingCar Summit examines the fundamental economic forces of supply, demand, and public oversight driving deployment and commercialization of vehicle autonomy. The event is co-chaired by Professor Alain Kornhauser of Princeton University and features academic, industry, and government experts discussing the safety benefits of self-driving cars, regulatory challenges, mobility and community service benefits, and technology.

The summit will feature demonstrations of the Velodyne Alpha Puck™, a lidar sensor specifically made for autonomous driving and advanced vehicle safety at highway speeds, and Velodyne Velarray™, the smartest, most powerful lidar for driver assistance. Velodyne’s lidar sensors deliver an industry-leading combination of long range, high resolution, and wide field of view. At the summit, AutonomouStuff will conduct a demonstration of an AV operating with Velodyne lidar.

“High-resolution, long-range lidar is the most critical sensor for advancing smart driving mobility,” said John Eggert, Director, Automotive Sales & Marketing, Velodyne Lidar, who will participate in workshop sessions during the summit. “Velodyne’s trailblazing sensors encapsulate over ten years of lidar development and learning from millions of road miles to meet the entire range of lidar needs for autonomy and driver assistance. We are the highest volume supplier of lidar sensors to the automotive industry and have more than 250 customers globally.”

In a summit session, Vidya Devarasetty, Global Automotive Business Development Manager at Velodyne Lidar, will examine the current state-of-the-art of lidar technology and the near-term technological opportunities. The session will discuss how Velodyne sensors provide rich computer perception data that allows real-time object and free space detection for safe navigation and reliable operation.

“It is time to move past the hype and accelerate the commercialization and deployment of SmartDriving technology so society can begin to capture its benefits,” said Professor Kornhauser. “The SmartDrivingCar Summit looks to build a welcoming environment for smart mobility for cars, buses, and trucks. The event gathers thought leaders, such as Velodyne Lidar, so they can explore how to work together to more quickly achieve safe, convenient mobility for everyone, especially the mobility disadvantaged.”
