Esri Announces Student Poster Competition with ISI World Statistics Congress

REDLANDS, Calif.— Esri, the global leader in location intelligence, today announced it will donate free software to students who qualify to compete in the 2018–2019 International Statistical Institute (ISI)/Esri Student Poster Competition. The competition aims to promote the integration of statistical and geospatial data, encourage location-based thinking, and inspire curiosity around geographic patterns and relationships.

Applicants of the contest must be enrolled as full-time students at a university. Teams can propose an abstract for a poster that displays the ways that statistical data and location intelligence can demonstrate issues involving the economy, the environment, crime, transportation, climate, urban planning, land use or cover, sustainable development, health, and disasters. Licenses of Esri’s ArcGIS software will be donated to student groups selected to use in the competition for its duration.

“Esri is happy to join with ISI to foster the development of spatial thinking and methods among our future leaders,” said Linda Peters, Esri global business development manager. “Providing students with the tools to be able to better understand geographic relationships that make sense of global statistics gives us an opportunity to inspire the next generation to change the world for the better.”

An international panel will judge teams based on their entries, and final judging of the selected teams will take place during the ISI World Statistics Congress in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, August 18–23, 2019. First-, second-, and third-place cash prizes of up to $2,500 will be awarded, along with a one-year ArcGIS student license to each student in the winning groups.

“Spatial data, modeling, analysis, and visualization have long been of importance in statistics but are rapidly of increasing significance in real contexts across all disciplines, in government, and in empowering communities and citizens,” said Helen MacGillivray, ISI president. “ISI is pleased to collaborate with Esri in this new competition to engage university students in exploring these important areas of statistics.”

ISI is one of the oldest scientific associations still active throughout the world today and supports statisticians and statistical organizations worldwide. The institute covers a wide range of statistical areas, interests, and applications and develops partnerships with national and international organizations to lead, support, and promote the understanding, development, and good practice of statistics.

The application deadline for the 2018–2019 ISI/Esri Student Poster Competition is November 30, 2018. For more details about the competition and to submit your poster, visit go.esri.com/isi_student_competition.
