Hyderabad’s growth in the last three decades has come at the cost of 375 lakes going extinct, the latest National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) survey has revealed. Using remote sensing data obtained from the National Remote Sensing Agency (NRSA), researchers at NGRI have established that encroachments and shrinking of lakes in the erstwhile Hyderabad Urban Development Authority (Huda), the 650 square km area that largely corresponds to the area within the Outer Ring Road, went hand in hand with the population growth in the same period.
