In a unique project, scientists will soon launch airborne surveys to map deep and shallow aquifers in five States as a precursor for taking up a holistic programme all over the country to find out potential groundwater resources. Funded by World Bank, ‘Aquifer India Mapping Project’ (AQUIM), was started on a pilot basis last month. Describing it as a “high-profile project”, Mrinal K. Sen, Director, CSIR-National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), which is spearheading it, said that advanced technology would be used to map subsurface structures to know various aspects such as the properties of the rock layers.
