After their wells went dry and their crops failed due to shortage of water supply, the villagers of Khopala village in Saurashtra decided not to wait any longer, not even for help from the government. After surveying the area and identifying around 200 locations for constructing check dams, the villagers raised funds and started construction work in December 1998.
