Story Map Celebrates Australia Day’s Evolution

Previously known as ‘Anniversary Day’ and ‘Foundation Day’, the way we mark the 1788 arrival of the First Fleet of British Ships at Port Jackson, New South Wales, has evolved to match the times.

This year an interactive Australia Day map from smart mapping giant Esri Australia takes us across the country to witness Australia Day celebrations spanning more than a century in a series of fascinating images.

From fancy dress parades at the start of last century to the tall ships setting sail in Sydney Harbour during 1988’s Bicentenary celebrations, a rich and exciting history is revealed.
