The Geospatial World Awards Committee cited that the Western China Mapping Project, organized by the National Administration and Surveying, Mapping and Geoinformation (NASG) and implemented by the Chinese Academy of Surveying and Mapping (CASM), generated 5032 topographic maps at the scale of 1:50,000 for an area of around 2 million square kilometers in the west part of China despite the fact that the average altitude of the terrain is 4,500m above sea level. As a result of the Project, China has completed 100% coverage of its land territory with 1:50,000 topographic maps and fundamental geographic information data.
