Bayanat to Provide Complete Geospatial Solution for Abu Dhabi’s New Street Addressing, Geo-Names and Signage System Project

The agreement was signed by Undersecretary of the Department of Municipal Affairs, Engineer Ahmed Mohammed Sharif, and CEO of Bayanat, Khaled Al Melhi, in the presence of DMA’s Chairman, Majid Ali Al Mansouri, and Bayanat Chairman, Rashid Bin Lahej Al Mansouri.

Under the terms of its agreement with DMA, Bayanat will be responsible for the establishment and maintenance of a unified central database of geographical names and addresses in the Emirate, the development of world-class standards for collecting and documenting geographical names and the development of an addressing system that will serve as a unified reference for all involved government entities in addition to developing standards and mechanisms for geographical names suggestion and approval, establishing a strategic plan and a road map for the geographic names, street addressing and signage departments and supporting the Emiratization process for the job vacancies at DMA through recommending and executing a human capital qualification and development program for Emirati workforce and improving their managerial and technical skills.

Geographic names will be selected in collaboration with the Higher Committee of Geographic Names and the Department of Municipal Affairs. Meanwhile, a database is being developed to organize, unify, document, record and adopt the geographic names of areas, landscapes, streets and various regions of the Emirate. This database will act as the main reference for selecting the names of streets and landscapes.

The DMA in collaboration with local municipalities and other relevant entities has already begun the execution of the Abu Dhabi Emirate Street Address, Geo-Names and Signage System Project in Abu Dhabi where it is about to start executing a pilot project covering the Al Falah Residential Area and Mariah Island. This follows the recent approval by the Executive Committee of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council to undertake the project.

The DMA has prepared a general standards and specifications manual for the Addressing, Signage and Geographic Naming System that provides a unified foundation for street address standards and procedures across Abu Dhabi and other federal areas. This will be under the supervision of the National Committee for the Unification of Street Addresses and Signage in the UAE, in collaboration with the Municipal Affairs Coordination Council.

The Department has also made sure that the new Addressing, Signage and Geographic Naming System is simple and user-friendly, with all signage and banners to include Arabic and English versions of the building number, street name (if not repeated within city limits), city name, emirate and postal code to be assigned in collaboration with Emirates Post. Inspired by the addressing and geographic naming systems of several developed countries, the project will include an electronic navigational system that will identify street and building locations and indicate the shortest path to any destination. The addressing applications will be available via smart phones and internet to enable the public to utilize them in finding the directions to their destinations.

The Abu Dhabi Emirate Street Address, Geo-Names and Signage System Project is part of DMA’s ongoing efforts to help realize Abu Dhabi Vision 2030’s goal of transforming the Emirate into one of the world’s top five governments in terms of public service excellence.

It also reflects the commitment of the municipal system to keep pace with comprehensive local development and enhanced public services by providing the society and all business sectors, including emergency services, with a simple and comprehensible signage system that ensures faster and safer travel to any destination within Abu Dhabi.

The project will positively impact the local economy and key sectors such as tourism by boosting business activities and facilitating the smooth flow of traffic, particularly for business-oriented transport such as trucks and delivery vehicles. It will also help tourists and visitors to easily locate and reach touristic destination within the Emirate.

Majid Ali Al Mansouri said that the signing complements DMA’s pursuit of the best consultancy services for the implementation of Abu Dhabi Emirate Street Address, Geo-Names and Signage System, while leveraging the extensive expertise of one of the leading national companies in this field.

He lauded the industry leadership of Bayanat and its ability to meet the various needs of the municipal system and follow the highest international standards to build an integrated Spatial Data Infrastructure for the project. He explained that this will enable the municipal system to better facilitate traffic flow in the Emirate and ensure that all road users travel faster and more conveniently to their destinations. The DMA Chairman added that providing the best address and street signage services across economic, service, healthcare, security and other key sectors will help to enhance their productivity and efficiency.

For his part, Rashid Bin Lahej Al Mansouri emphasized the significant role of the newly concluded agreement in meeting common visions of both organizations and providing high-quality consultancy services and solutions to DMA for its Abu Dhabi Emirate Street Addressing, Geo-Names and Signage System.

Al Mansouri stated his belief that the new partnership will strengthen the cooperation with the municipal system and accordingly establishes Bayanat as a strategic partner of DMA in realizing a major project e that would optimize Abu Dhabi’s navigation system and enables its inhabitants, business community and emergency entities to use a user-friendly, state-of-the-art addressing and signage system.
