Belarus, Russia Sign Cooperation Agreement on Satellite Navigation

The cooperation agreement envisages the use of the emergency response system on the territory of Belarus, harmonization of this system with Europe’s eCall, unobstructed and safe movement of vehicles and cargo along international transport corridors passing through the territory of Belarus and Russia. The two countries plan to develop compatible navigation and information systems using GLONASS satellite navigation solutions. The systems will be able to monitor all types of vehicles.

“This strategic partnership in the field of navigation solutions will contribute to formation of the single navigation and information space on the territory of the Union State and will provide navigation and information support for the transport corridors passing through the territories of our countries,” President of NP GLONASS Alexander Gurko said.

Deputy head of the department for defense and promising arms, military and special-purpose equipment of the State Defense Industries Committee of Belarus Yuri Samul informed that last year Belarus developed an accidence response system and the bulk of the necessary documents. This year the system will be tested and next year it will be finalized and its commercial production will be launched.

The signatories unveiled their plans to work on the most important government projects of Belarus and Russia, like development of navigation-based solutions in the Customs Union, development and operation of navigation systems to record the speed of heavy goods vehicles, to monitor and control the movement of vehicles transporting hazardous substances and heavy goods. The parties will consider a possibility to work out solutions enabling automatic control of traffic rules.
