This is the second Fugro ship as it joins the Fugro Discovery. The AUV will be programmed with a search area and will search the area before surfacing and sending the data that it collects. The current search effort uses a towed sonar equipment, and the AUV has complementary technology that can search in the shadows where the sonar can’t detect.
To date, the underwater mapping effort has covered 14,000 square kilometers, which is one fifth of the designated search area. Completion of the mapping effort is expected in April or May of this year.
