Within the next year, production satellites for the Japanese QZSS system, the Chinese Compass, and the European Galileo constellation will all enter service. That's not really news. The timetable was already on the slate in 2000, and for all the pratfalls and pitfalls along the way, system providers have largely stuck to their guns. So, the evidence seems to be that it takes about a decade for the GNSS to evolve. That begs an interesting question: what will the GNSS look like in 2020?

The Japanese government has still not committed funds for building the second and third satellite in the QZSS GNSS, and will not until 2011, at the earliest. However, JAXA is proceeding with plans to encourage users to make the best of the system.

Japanese Ambassador to Zambia Hideto Mitamura has said a Japanese company is planning to work with the Zambian government to accurately map areas which have mineral resources which have not yet identified. Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Cooperation (JOGMEC) have state-of-the-art remote sensing technology which can be used for surface detection of minerals. Ambassador Mitamura said he was hoping to encourage more Japanese investment in Zambia.

Submissions for the GeoTec 2010 conference (13-15 April, Toronto) are now due December 7 2009. This geomatics conference is designed to provide a broad vendor-neutral overview of geospatial-technology tools and applications. Organisers are still seeking presentations for the following concurrent tracks: data; emerging technologies; executive decision support; and interoperability.

The organisers of the 2010 ESRI International User Conference (12–16 July 2010, San Diego) have issued a call for papers for a new track concentrating on geographic information science. Accepted papers will be published in a special issue of Transactions in GIS, to be distributed at the conference. Leica Geosystems has released a full-waveform digitiser designed specifically for use with its ALS-series airborne LIDAR Systems. The digitizer, called Leica WDM65, is offered for new ALS60 system controllers as well as for fielded ALS60 and ALS50-II systems. No additional external hardware is needed to record return signal waveforms, making operation of this new feature transparent to the user.

Version 1.1 of ESRI's MapIt product is now available. The latest release has been improved to allow users to better visualize the connection between tabular data and its geographic properties. It also includes Microsoft Windows Azure and SQL Azure support for developing applications on line. MapIt is a package for creating and sharing maps generated with data from Microsoft SQL Server 2008, Excel, and SharePoint lists.

Hemisphere GPS in Calgary has announced the release of the new version of Outback AutoMate for precision farmers. The new version includes advanced software and three customised planter kits for the boom section control product. Outback AutoMate monitors and controls individual sprayer or planter sections to minimise overlaps and skips.
