SANDIS Innovates Surveying with Leica CS20 Controllers and Captivate

November 25, 2015 — Leica Geosystems Inc. today announced that SANDIS, headquartered in Campbell, Calif., has upgraded its capabilities with the purchase of 15 Leica CS20 Controllers powered by Leica Captivate software. SANDIS provides engineering and surveying services, including civil and traffic engineering, storm water management, land surveying, construction staking, 3D scanning and utility locating. With offices throughout California and one in South Carolina, the company supports design and construction in these regions.

The Leica CS20 Controller coupled with a Leica Geosystems total station enables accurate electronic distance measuring and displays the 3D data captured on its screen. The controllers include an integrated BT module designed for long range robotic total station communication, a 5 megapixel internal camera, and the world‘s first integrated DISTO for accurate distance measuring. The controllers use Leica Captivate software, which works with a variety of measurement instruments, including MultiStations and total stations, to streamline and simplify linework and coding; seamlessly merge design, survey and scan data; and create realistic 3D renderings in the field.

SANDIS’ President Ken Olcott transitioned the entire company to this seamless solution because it supports the firm’s goals of hiring top surveyors and empowering them with first-class tools. Having used Leica Geosystems total stations exclusively for more than 25 years and, more recently, the Leica Viva GS15 GNSS solution and Leica ScanStation C10 and P40 3D laser scanners, Olcott said he trusts Leica Geosystems to deliver quality and accuracy. “Leica Geosystems total stations, GNSS and laser scanners are the best equipment for high precision and productivity in field operations,” he said.

The Leica CS20 has a large screen with a 3D view and user-friendly touch-screen interface, providing SANDIS’ field crews with easier control for linework generation and staking calculations. Also, because the Leica CS20 connects easily with other platforms, it provides the surveyors with the flexibility to switch quickly from GNSS to a total station. Additionally, the fully integrated system increases the speed and quality of data transfer to and from the office.

With these advantages and SANDIS’ goal to provide fast, quality service to their large and sophisticated client base, it was an easy decision to replace their existing hardware and software with the Leica CS20s and Captivate. “With the CS20s, we saw increased productivity and quality of both our field and office operations,” said Olcott. “Our crews work on hundreds of large, technical and complex projects. Whether we are laying out piles for a new NFL stadium or setting embeds for a Silicon Valley high-tech campus, we need to be precise and timely. We are only as good as our last survey. The Leica Geosystems total stations, CS20s and Captivate allow us to maintain a great track record.”

“SANDIS has a reputation for handling large, technical and complex projects accurately, on time and on budget,” said Craig Martin, Leica Geosystems U.S. survey segment manager. “The company’s forward-thinking approach to streamlining workflows and providing its crews with innovative, high-quality surveying solutions positions the firm to provide the best possible service to its diverse client base.”
