Vector1 Media Welcomes Roger Longhorn with the Launch of SDI Magazine

SDI covers the technologies, policies and institutional agreements that make geospatial data available and accessible for multiple applications. Among the target organizations are local and regional government, agriculture, forestry, health and medicine, population and demographics, meteorology and climate change, urban planning and land use, coastal, oceanography and marine, transportation, utilities, environment, and natural sciences.

“Everything, everyone and every event is located somewhere, which is why spatial information, that all important location attribute attached to huge volumes of data in our modern society, is recognised as playing a special role in national, regional and global information infrastructure,” said Roger Longhorn, recognized SDI expert, vice-Chair (Communications) of the GSDI Association Outreach Committee, Information Policy Advisor at the Coastal & Marine Union (EUCC), and now editor of SDI Magazine. “SDI developments began as early as 1990 in various parts of the world, yet no one professes to have a complete SDI today. Hence the importance of communicating developments in best practice, and identifying and overcoming challenges, whether technical, political, or financial. Spreading such knowledge and encouraging discourse are key goals of SDI Magazine.”

With this addition, Vector1 Media follows the pattern of its start by combining the talents, connections and authority of long-time geospatial journalists. Jeff Thurston of Berlin, Germany was formerly editor of GeoInformatics and GEO:connexion magazines. Matt Ball was formerly editor of GeoWorld magazine. Roger Longhorn was formerly editor of GEO:connexion magazine and is a published author on a range of SDI-related topics.

“We’re excited to add a publication that focuses primarily on geospatial data creation and dissemination,” said Matt Ball, co-founder and editor at Vector1 Media. “The aspect of global cooperation is particularly compelling for the mission of our organization as we view geospatial data and technologies as critical to address issues of accelerated global change.” Vector1 Media advocates the importance of integrated intelligent models that holistically allow us to visualize, simulate, analyze, monitor and manage our impact on the environment. Sustainability is a key driver of all of our content, and we promote the use of spatial tools to achieve the better stewardship of our planet.

“The geospatial sector has evolved. Mature applications are now connecting technology, people and policies together. SDI Magazine is an expression of this integration and the recognition that SDIs are fundamental building blocks for injecting spatial considerations into all aspects of how people live today and tomorrow.” stated Jeff Thurston, co-founder and editor at Vector1 Media. “People want to participate and collaborate in this process, and SDI Magazine will promote that with Roger’s guidance” SDI Magazine can be reached at www.sdimag.com
